LOCAL DETAIL
Dallas is home. The city splits into two very different jobs. East of Central, around Lakewood and the M Streets, the lots are deep and the trees are mature, so those yards usually want a covered structure tied into an existing roofline, and the shade is already there. North of LBJ and out toward the newer builds, the lots are smaller and there is no shade at all, so the structure has to make its own.
Soil is the thing that catches people out here. Dallas sits on Blackland Prairie clay, which swells when it rains and shrinks hard in August. It is the same ground that keeps the foundation repair business busy, and it does exactly the same thing to fence posts and to stone laid straight onto graded dirt.
That is why Archetex sets posts in galvanized steel and bases walkways on compacted aggregate rather than on soil that is going to move twice a year. It costs more on day one and it saves the whole job by year three.
