Richardson has some of the best mature tree cover in the metroplex, which changes what a back yard needs. Shade is often already solved, so the work shifts toward a structure that extends the house, beds that work in dry shade, and fencing that is holding up rather than holding on.

Big established trees bring their own constraint: roots. Post holes and footings have to go where they will not cut a major root, and sometimes that moves a structure a few feet. Better to find that out with a shovel than after a tree declines two summers later.

Planting under those trees is its own problem, because most of what the big-box store sells wants full sun. Beds here get planted for the light they actually get.
